How to Be Effective When Championing a Cause

In NationSwell’s article, Erin Schrode Shares 7 Secrets To Be Effective Activist, Erin Schrode shared 7 different tips for being more effective when serving as an activist. For those not familiar with Erin Schrode, she is the founder of the nonprofit organization, Turning Green, and she ran in California in an attempt to become the youngest female Congresswoman in the United States.

START SMALL

In the article, the tips she shares are invaluable. It’s important to remember that when we’re trying to change things we have to start small. If you ask someone to change something, and it’s a huge list, that person is going to be more resistant, and dig his or her feet in further. With a lot of people wanting to get involved in activist causes following the 2016 election cycle, it’s easy to want fast results. However, change rarely happens quickly.

LEAN ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media is a powerful tool. Not only can you use it to leverage the strength of your friends and followers, but joining groups and networking with others in your field and interest area can put you in touch with actions and people you wouldn’t otherwise have access to. Look past the standards of having a Facebook Page for your cause – check out some of the already existing groups with like-minded people to help build enthusiasm for your project.

AVOID ARMCHAIR ACTIVISM

While it’s easy to help from the comfort of your own sofa with a laptop in front of you – I’m sure at this point we’ve all signed petitions and shared memes for those things we’re passionate about – it’s vital to get out there and connect with others in the real world. Is there an upcoming march? Think about going. Are you trying to get signatures? Go out and get a permit and get them – in person.

RUN FOR LOCAL OFFICE OR SERVE ON A BOARD

In her article, Erin Schrode, advises that activists plan on running for office. I do think that is an important part of activism. But I also think it’s important to get involved with organizations you are passionate about supporting. Do you love your library? Consider being on the Friends of the Library board. Do you want to help bring fresh fruits and vegetables to more people at the local farmers’ market? Consider being on the board. Keep pushing forward, and being the kind of change you want to see.

What actions are you taking to get involved with your local community or organizations? Post your thoughts in the comments section.
