10 Ways to Start Getting Involved with Your Community

When you want to get involved with your community, particularly if you’ve just relocated to a new community, you may find either that you’re unsure what organizations exist to get involved with or you’re overwhelmed with choices. Here’s a list of 10 ways to start getting involved with your community when you don’t know what you want to do.

1. Ask Friends about the Organizations They Support

When you’re not sure where to start, ask friends about where they like to volunteer their time. Often you’ll learn about a new organization you didn’t know about.

2. Join Local Volunteer Facebook Groups

Sometimes, you’re new to an area. A great way to get involved is by joining local volunteer groups. Many of the listed opportunities are one-off volunteer opportunities, but it’s a great way to get involved and familiarize yourself with your local community.

3. Look to the United Way

The United Way provides funding and support to many different organizations in the community. They can be a great resource for those needing resources and those looking to volunteer their time.

4. Check Out Volunteer Match and Catchafire

Volunteer Match and Catchafire are both great organizations for getting matched with projects. You can do many Catchafire projects at home while benefitting organizations that need assistance.

5. Look for Local Chapters of Your Favorite National Organizations

Many national organizations have local chapters of their organizations. When on their website, see if there’s a “locations we serve” tab. Habitat For Humanity is just one such organization.

6. Search Google

When I was interested in seeing what community gardens existed in my area, I searched Google with “Wichita and Community Gardens.” I was impressed to see so many were out there! Using search terms with my local area and a cause or project I’m looking for often nets the information I’m looking for.

7. See If Your Town or City Has a Nonprofit Chamber of Commerce

Some cities have a chamber of commerce dedicated to nonprofit organizations. This can be an excellent resource for contacting organizations with which to volunteer.

8. Support Your Local Businesses

Become a regular at locally owned small businesses. This is a great way to support your local community and those living there and get to know people and the important causes of your community.

9. Participate in Community Events

Every community has annual events – many have events more frequently than that. If you want to get to know your community, attend its events. You’ll meet other people and get to know the vibe of the community. Many organizations have tables or booths at events, which can be an excellent way to learn what organizations serve your community.

10. Check Out Farmer’s Markets and Art Fairs

While these technically could fall under community events, they have a different vibe. Getting involved with your local farmer’s market and art fairs is another great way to meet people, learn about your local community, and see opportunities.

What’s your favorite way to start getting involved in your local community? If I didn’t mention it, please comment below.
