What Are the Benefits of Volunteering?

The other day, I discussed the possibility of volunteer burnout and how to handle it, but volunteering has many benefits. Of course, volunteering helps those the organization is helping, but it also has other benefits. Here’s a great short video about the unexpected benefits of volunteering.

I agree that these are benefits of volunteering. My favorite benefit has been the friendships I have made through volunteering. Other volunteers tend to be pretty cool people, and they tend to care about many of the same causes I do. One of the first things I like to do when I move to a new community is to volunteer for a cause there. It enables me to meet a lot of people quickly.

I also think that volunteering does help with employment. Sometimes, volunteers work as paid employees for the organizations they volunteer with. Other times, they gain valuable experience (make sure you put your volunteer experience on your resume) that helps them obtain a job that needs experience.

What do you think? Do you agree with these benefits of volunteering? Are there other benefits to volunteering that you can think of? Share below in the comments.

  1. Ronda, I have to agree there are tons of benefits to volunteering, the friendships developed for me is the best. I also have to say that because I watched my mother involved in some many volunteer opportunities I am always on the look out for volunteer opportunities as well. She really showed us that you’re never too busy to lend a hand.

  3. When I volunteer, I enjoy knowing that I’m helping people who cannot help themselves in the way I can. It’s a God-given privilege and I’m grateful for it.
