Looking to the Future of Activism My Way

Before I start highlighting causes, organizations, and individuals, I want to take a moment to share what my vision for this site is. I want to add short e-books listing organizations in cities that people can get involved with. I have outlines for these, and I even have some of them started (starting with places I’ve lived). That’s a big goal I’ve had since starting this blog.

I’m also hoping to find folks who’d like to contribute to this blog – either on a one-off basis as a guest post or as a regular contributor. I really do want this to become a community hub where people come to get ideas for things they can do that will help make our world better.

I worry a lot about the world’s future, particularly what the world and my country, the United States, will look like in general. I feel like the best thing to do to shape the world I live in is to get involved with the very causes I care most about. Voting is important. Letters of opinion are important. But it’s the folks on the ground working together to tutor kids, provide health services for the unhoused, rescue food that would otherwise go to the landfill, and help folx get away from abusive partners; they are the ones who are making worlds of difference to individual people.

The first project I plan to work on is a general guide for people who want to take action on a cause but don’t know where to start. This guide will not focus on any area, cause, or organization. It will offer a variety of ideas to help folks get started no matter their current situation. I’m excited to share progress on that with everyone. It’s researched. It’s outlined. Parts are written. I just need to finish it and get it posted.

Meanwhile, I will continue to volunteer with Girl Scouts. I’m a troop leader and a member of both the Silver Award Committee and Gold Award Committee for my council. I’m hoping to get more involved with my local library and with community organizations helping the unhoused this year. My 5th grader will be working on her Bronze Award for Girl Scouts and is planning to do a project that helps those who are unhoused in our area.

What are your goals for getting involved with your community this year? Share in the comments below.

  1. So glad I stumbled across this post! I am very passionate about environmentalism, equity, and workers rights, as well as just improving the overall health and conditions the average person experiences.

My goals for getting involved in my community this year are:
    – Collecting and sharing businesses that have exceptional working conditions, are environmentally friendly or sustainable, and/or are women, queer, and BIPOC owned.
    – Hosting a few local events for wellness.
    – Continuing to speak on and share about the topics I find important that will impact the world in a more positive and uplifting way.

  2. What a great blog Ronda and a super project for your 5th grader to do for Girl Scouts. For the past 3 years my almost 6 year great granddaughter has participated in the Alzheimer’s Fundraiser in memory of my mom. Lia loves baking so she has Lia’s Sunshine Bakery bake sales throughout the year and other challenges to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s. Looking forward to following your blog!
